The Bed Bug Surge in South African Accommodation
Bed bug (Cimex lectularius) infestations in South African hotels, guesthouses, Airbnbs, and backpacker lodges have increased significantly over the past five years. The rise correlates with increased domestic and international travel, shorter turnaround times between guests in accommodation, and the widespread resistance of bed bugs to pyrethroid-based insecticides. Critically, bed bug infestations are not a sign of a dirty establishment โ they are transported by guests and are found in five-star hotels as readily as budget accommodation. A single hitchhiking bug or egg in your luggage is enough to start an infestation in your home.
How Bed Bugs Travel Home With You
Bed bugs do not jump or fly โ they crawl and hide. They typically enter your luggage by crawling into bags left open on the floor or on upholstered furniture. They hide in the seams of clothing, inside shoes, and in the pockets of bags. Egg clusters are often deposited in fabric folds and go unnoticed until they hatch at home. A pregnant female producing 1โ5 eggs per day for several weeks can establish a new infestation from a single hotel stay.
The 7-Step Hotel Check โ Do This Every Time
- โ Before placing luggage anywhere, put it in the bathroom on a hard tile floor โ bed bugs rarely infest bathrooms.
- โ Pull back the bed sheets and inspect the mattress seams, piping, and corners for dark spots (droppings), shed skins, or live bugs.
- โ Check the headboard โ remove it if possible and inspect the back and mounting area.
- โ Inspect behind the bedside table and inside the bedside drawer.
- โ Check upholstered chairs and the sofa โ run your hand along seams and under cushions.
- โ Use your phone torch for the inspection โ bed bugs are 4โ5mm, flat, and reddish-brown.
- โ If you find anything suspicious, request a different room โ ideally on a different floor.
How to Store Your Luggage During Your Stay
- โ Never place luggage on the bed, on the floor near the bed, or on upholstered furniture.
- โ Use the metal luggage rack โ keep it away from the wall.
- โ Place each item of clothing in a sealed plastic bag before placing it in the suitcase.
- โ When not in use, keep your suitcase closed and zipped at all times.
What to Do When You Get Home
Before bringing your luggage inside, unpack in the garage or outside if possible. Place all clothing โ whether worn or not โ directly into a black bag and then into the washing machine on a hot cycle (above 60ยฐC). Tumble dry on high heat for 30 minutes. Heat above 50ยฐC for 90 seconds kills all bed bug life stages. Your suitcase itself should be inspected thoroughly and wiped down, paying attention to seams, wheels, and handles. Consider leaving your empty suitcase in a sealed black bag in a hot car or outside in full sun for several days โ heat exposure kills any remaining bugs or eggs.
Early Signs of a Bed Bug Infestation at Home
- โ Unexplained bites appearing in lines or clusters on exposed skin in the morning.
- โ Small rust-coloured blood spots on your pillowcase or sheets.
- โ A sweet, musty odour in the bedroom โ described as over-ripe raspberries in large infestations.
- โ Dark spotting (droppings) on the mattress seams or behind the headboard.
- โ Shed exoskeletons (translucent, empty casings) in mattress folds.
What to Do If You Find Bed Bugs at Home
Act immediately โ do not wait to see if it gets better on its own. Early-stage infestations of 10โ20 bugs are far easier and cheaper to treat than established ones. Do not spray retail insecticide โ it disperses them into wall voids. Contact a professional pest control company for a heat treatment or targeted insecticide programme. Avoid moving infested mattresses or furniture through the house as this spreads the infestation to other rooms.
